Why Painters Talk About Prep and Not Paint

Two crews can use the same gallon of paint and produce completely different rooms.

Paint does not hide anything. It highlights. Every unsanded ridge, unfilled nail hole and open caulk joint is more visible after painting than before.

Caulk every gap where trim meets wall. This one step is the difference between a room that looks painted and a room that looks finished.

Sand between coats on trim and doors. It is the step everyone skips and the one you feel with your hand.

Cutting in by hand beats tape in most rooms. Tape bleeds on textured walls and pulls paint off older trim.

Two coats means two coats. One heavy coat is not the same thing and it will flash where the roller overlapped.

Sheen by room: flat hides wall imperfection, satin and semi-gloss survive cleaning. Bathrooms and trim want the durable end, living rooms want the forgiving end.
