How do you hang a very heavy mirror?

With a French cleat fastened into studs. It spreads the load across the wall and lets the mirror sit flat, which is both stronger and better looking than a single hanger.

Yes. We patch, sand and touch up so the old hardware locations disappear rather than sitting next to the new ones.
